Officials keep close Covid eye on jail | News, Sports, Jobs

djohnson@mojonews.com LISBON The number of Covid-19 cases rose in other parts of the state this week and Columbiana County numbers also rose slightly. One location where coronavirus concerns have returned is at the Columbiana County jail, which is reportedly awaiting more conclusive test results after some inmates received positive rapid test results, according to county Health Commissioner Wes Vins. After speaking to the jail warden Friday morning, Vins said he is confident the jail is identifying and segregating those who possibly came in contact with potentially positive inmates. He also has spoken with the county commissioners, Sheriff Brian McLaughlin and court personnel, to make sure everyone is notified who may deal regularly with those inmates.

COVID-19 variants proving more contagious in northern Ohio

Gov. Mike DeWine during the state coronavirus update on Thursday, April 1, 2021. DAYTON State officials on Thursday reminded Ohioans they’re still at war against the novel coronavirus and the state’s lost some footing in recent weeks. The state s seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases each day was about 1,800 this week, compared to 1,500 last week. Cases, as I noted, are also up in Ohio for the first week in a long time, Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, Ohio Department of Health s chief medical officer, said during a Thursday briefing on the state s coronavirus response. Three highly infectious variants of the novel coronavirus are responsible for most of the hundreds of genetic changes to the virus medical experts have recorded lately, state officials said.

Health district cuts ties with long-standing board member | News, Sports, Jobs

Amato LISBON After more than 40 years on the Columbiana County General Health District board, Dr. Jack Amato was not reappointed during the annual meeting of the advisory council on Monday night. Fairfield Township Trustee Bob Hum and East Palestine Mayor Trent Conaway made the motion and second to return Amato for another five-year term, but the motion failed by a vote of 13-8. Madison Township Trustee Wayne Chamberlain was among those who offered it may be time for someone new to fill that seat. Health Commissioner Wes Vins pointed out the seat that Amato fills on the board is unique because he is the physician representative. Any replacement would need to be a physician. Vins was also concerned about leaving the health department without a physician on the board for any length of time.
