Diageo Innovates Sustainable Glass Scotch Whisky Bottles
Spirits giant Diageo recently collaborated with glass manufacturer Encirc in a pilot project to create what’s said to be the lowest carbon footprint glass bottles ever produced for a Scotch whisky brand. Diageo and Encirc worked alongside industry research and technology body Glass Futures to create waste-based biofuel-powered furnaces to reduce the carbon footprint of the bottle-making process by 90%.
Diageo used its Black & White Scotch whisky brand to test out the innovative technology. It produced 173,000 Black & White bottles using 100% recycled glass, making it the most environmentally friendly batch of Scotch whiskey ever made, according to the company.
Use a muddler to gently crush the berries & mint
Pour in 45ml of Johnnie Walker Black Label
Add crushed ice to the top and add soda water until halfway
Wiggle your bar spoon right to the bottom of the glass, hitting the base, give it a proper stir
Top with soda
Agitate your sprig of mint by slapping it against your palm
Garnish with mint and slurp it up! That’s a fabulous way to go highballing’ into the weekend!
Tips:
Adding all the soda and then giving it a stir will cause fizziness to reduce and take away the beautiful gradation in your drink.

A truly momentous occasion for glass : Diageo produces glass whisky bottles in waste-powered furnaces
Black & White Scotch whisky is is popular in global export markets, according to Diageo
Drinks giant claims biofuel furnaces tested in trial will reduce carbon footprint of glass manufacturing by 90 per cent and thus boost sustainability of its “grain-to-glass” supply chain
Hundreds of thousands of bottles of Black & White Scotch have been produced in furnaces powered by waste in a pioneering trial that could set a fresh standard for low carbon glass bottle production.
Drinks giant Diageo announced late last week it had produced 173,000 recycled-glass whisky bottles in waste-based biofuel furnaces as part of a successful pilot project with glass manufacturer Encirc and government-backed research and development (R&D) body Glass Futures.
For the purposes of the trial, Diageo used its Black & White Scotch whisky brand – famous for its label featuring a West Highland terrier and a Scotty dog, and which is a popular and growing whisky in key global export markets.
The trial produced 173,000 Black & White bottles, also using 100% recycled glass, making the batch the most environmentally-friendly ever produced for a Scotch whisky brand.
Further work now needs to be done to develop and scale the trial for future production, but it represents a significant step forward in Diageo’s drive to transform the sustainability of its grain-to-glass supply chain.
It has supported Glass Futures from concept and following the success of the trial, Diageo has agreed a 10-year partnership to accelerate collaboration and innovation in the glass industry.
