Finley's Adventures: Avoiding the algae and swimming in Hop Brook

Sherry Fendell “Blue-green algae is a bacteria that lives in freshwater and often lives in colonies large enough to be visible to the naked eye. Its growth can be spurred by the phosphorus and nitrogen-rich nutrients that can be found in runoffs from farms, towns and suburbs, especially those found in shallow, warm stretches of warm water. Blue-green algae (Cyanobacteria) can be deadly to animals if they ingest infected water while swimming or playing in it.”  USA Today July 15, 2021  I’ve been reading about the sudden proliferation of blue-green algae blooms in our area. The heavy rains of early summer have caused the runoff of fertilizers and other farm and garden chemicals into our lakes and ponds. As a result, there has been a development and expansion of these toxic blooms which look bluish green or the colors of green pea soup or turquoise paint. Lake Cochituate and White Pond beaches, just to name a couple of them, are closed to swimmers.
