CROWN POINT â A Lake Criminal Court judge sentenced a Hammond man Thursday to 60 years in prison for shooting his cousin to death over what prosecutors described as a case of damaged pride.
Shaun A. Whitelow, 32, was convicted in May of murdering 30-year-old cousin Darvell L. Smith, of Hammond, early Nov. 3, 2019, as Smith sat in his parked car in the 2300 block of White Oak Avenue in Hammond s Robertsdale neighborhood.
The two had fought the night before during a family party at another location in Hammond. Police were called, but no arrests were made during the earlier fight.
Whitelow also was convicted in a subsequent bench trial of a firearm enhancement.

ENCINO, CA A motorcyclist was killed in a pileup on the westbound Ventura (101) Freeway, triggering a rush-hour SigAlert Wednesday.
The crash occurred at about 3:40 p.m. just east of White Oak Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The biker died at the scene, and the investigation shut down four lanes of the Ventura Freeway.

Authorities did not release the identity of the crash victim. No one else was hurt in the crash.

Hydrant Flushing on Thursday
The Zanesville Water Divisions will be flushing hydrants on Thursday.
It will take place in the general area of Wheeling Avenue, Sharon Avenue, Marietta Street, Bonifield Court, White Oak Avenue and all side streets.
Flushing will be from 7:30am to 3:00pm. Residents in these areas may experience discolored water and reduced pressure. It’s advised to wait until after 4:00pm for water to clear before doing laundry.
