“In 2021, I want our world leaders to treat the climate crisis like a crisis. It’s not something that’s going to happen in the future, it s an issue that’s already affecting millions of lives around the world. We need drastic action now.

How did you become involved in the environmental movement?
“Like most Indigenous people, I didn’t really have a choice. When the forest that your people depend on is being destroyed and your home is being threatened, you have no choice but to get involved. When I was a child, an oil company came to my community Sarayaku in the Ecuadorian Amazon, disrespecting my people’s decision to refuse any extractive activities in our territory. People were threatened, tortured and persecuted. When something like this happens, what do you do? You stand up and you fight back, together.”
