Francesca Estevez, former district attorney for the state’s Sixth Judicial District, was arrested just after 10 Friday morning and charged with driving while intoxicated. Grant County Sheriff’s deputies made the arrest in the vicinity of mile marker 108 on U.S. 180, about 40 minutes after a 911 caller reported a reckless driver.
Less than 20 minutes after she was taken into custody, a former Silver City Police Department officer alerted the Daily Press newsroom that Estevez had been arrested.
“Deputies made contact and determined there was probable cause to stop the vehicle,” Grant County Sheriff Frank Gomez said. “After making contact, they did field sobriety tests and, based on the clues, arrested her.”

A woman is dead and a man was treated for a gunshot wound at Gila Regional Medical Center following a shooting incident at the Silver City Motel 6 on U.S. 180 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Silver City Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is investigating the incident as a homicide, according to Police Chief Fred Portillo, who identified the injured man as 29-year-old Nickolas Choeipo, and the deceased female as 30-year-old Codi Rhodes, both from Arizona. No charges have been filed in connection with the incident, which at least one person in the room at the time said was an accident.
