Five years ago, the International Criminal Court opened its first investigation outside the African continent, in Georgia. This is a highly symbolic investigation for Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda. Five years ago, the International Criminal Court (ICC) opened its first investigation outside the African continent, in Georgia. This investigation is eminently symbolic for Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda, who initiated and led it. She could announce the conclusions before her departure in June. This is a case full of dangers for the ICC, involving a major world power, Russia. In this first part, Justice Info recalls the political context of the ICC preliminary examination (2008-2015).

Georgia was the first place outside the African continent selected by the International Criminal Court for investigation. Twelve years after the 2008 war, the small Caucasian country is still waiting for the ICC conclusions. But in November, the ICC s Trust Fund for Victims committed to an assistance programme, even before a case has been opened. This is another first, and perhaps, a last hope for the victims.
