There were more than 70
non-fatal shootings and 13 homicides due to gun violence within Kalamazoo city limits in 2020. Overall, there were 14 homicides in Kalamazoo: three in Portage, two in Kalamazoo Township, one in Oshtemo Township and one in Richland Township, bringing the countywide homicide count to 21.
The total surpasses the previous century mark of 20 homicides in 2016. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV on Monday contributed nearly $700,000 for investments into three east-side Detroit neighborhoods as a part of its community benefits commitments.
The funds will contribute to environmental education and increased stormwater management at Chandler Park and support the city s Impact Neighborhood Fund that will support public projects in the Chandler Park, East Canfield and Riverbend neighborhoods. Monday night, the Council Bluffs City Council voted against a trio of requests by the YMCA that wouldâve seen the city vacate Baughn Street, amend the cityâs comprehensive plan and rezone Y-owned land as part of the nonprofit organizationâs plan to install a park and increase parking.
The YMCA of Greater Omaha had requested the city, through an ordinance, rezone the land southwest of the Charles E. Lakin YMCA at 235 Harmony St. from from residential to administrative-professional district, while also passing a resolution vacating and disposing of Baughn Street, which connects Harmony Street and Kanesville Boulevard. The city would retain an easement for utility maintenance on the Baughn Street land, according to Council Bluffs Planning and Zoning.
