CANTON Elections for local school districts loom closer and several candidates have thrown their hats into the ring to vie for seat on the Canton Central School District Board of Education.
In Canton, seven candidates are running for five open seats on May 18. Voting is from noon-8 p.m.
Victor N. Rycroft
Victor Rycroft, who is running for re-election, currently serves as president of the Canton board of education and has served on the board for 15 years.
“The past year has been a very trying one for our District as a whole. Our staff has worked extremely hard to maintain our educational goals and programs during the pandemic. Educational and support staff have worked hand-in-hand to provide for our students. I can easily recall numerous occasions where staff members have gone ‘above and beyond’ to support our programs,” Rycroft writes in the school newsletter.

CANTON A former Canton Central School board member has filled a seat recently vacated by Eileen Raymond.
CCS Superintendent Ron Burke said Raymond stepped down due to personal reasons.
The Board had three choices for the vacant seat. They could appoint someone, hold a special election or wait until the annual budget vote in May to vote.
Board President Victor Rycroft noted that the timing of the vacancy was important due to members being tasked with the new school budget and a capital project.
The Board decided to appoint Michelle Myers to the vacant seat. She has previous experience and board members felt her experience would be valuable dealing with the complicated nature of the budget and capital project season.

CANTON Schools have been seeing an increase in students testing positive for COVID-19, according to Canton Central Superintendent Ron Burke.
Several school districts have shifted to remote learning in recent weeks after positive COVID-19 tests of students and staff.
CCS has at least five students test positive for COVID in the last week.
“It’s a little bit unusual to see this many, we haven’t seen this many students this close together,” Burke said, noting that he did not think any of the students who tested positive were related.
