Why has it taken so long? That s a question I haven t been able to get out of my mind.
Cousins is the third feature film in history to be directed by wāhine Māori. The first was
Mauri by Merata Mita. That was 32 years ago – before I was even born. The second was
Waru in 2017, a feature film made up of eight ten-minute short films written and directed by Māori women filmmakers. I have spent the last ten years telling stories as a writer and journalist, doing my best to decolonise the space I am in, while at the same time advocating for sovereignty over our stories. As Māori, we need more of our stories told, but more importantly, we need to be telling our own stories.

Festival of Colour arts and ideas festival today revealed a
packed week-long programme featuring an exciting mix of
theatre, dance, music, visual arts and conversation to take
place in April in Wānaka.
Known as ‘the best little
arts festival in New Zealand’, the Festival of Colour
takes place from Monday 12 to Sunday 18 April.
It will
be the ninth festival, and director Philip Tremewan says the
2021 festival will bring heart, soul and creative joy to the
town and surrounding area.

Two Wellingtonians have become Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit in today’s New Year Honours List:
Sue Chetwin, for services to consumer rights.
Having begun her career in journalism, Ms Chetwin was editor of the Sunday News from 1994 to 1998, the Sunday Star-Times from 1998 to 2003, and founding editor of the Herald on Sunday from 2003 to 2005. As Chief Executive of Consumer New Zealand from 2007 to 2020 she successfully campaigned for many important consumer law reforms, including prohibitions on unfair contract terms, fairness in consumer credit contracts, country of origin labelling, and controlling door knockers. She has led other successful campaigns on behalf of consumers including calling for mandatory standards for sunscreens, helping to regulate mobile truck shops, and calling out businesses on misleading claims such as greenwashing. Her commitment to consumer rights have contributed to New Zealand having a strong consumer protection ethos
One-hundred-and-fifty-four people from a variety of sectors including education, sport, health, and science have been honoured.
Actor Peter Elliott says being made an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit feels like it’s “validated” his life’s work. Elliott has worked in theatre and on screen since 1980. He was made an officer for services to the performing arts and also baseball. His long career on television started out with appearances on
McPhail and Gadsby, but it was the entertainment show
