BELFAST Belfast Area High School students joined 200 fellow students and competitors from around the state for the 75th Maine State Science Fair, with a special emphasis on the ocean’s ecology and its relation to rising temperatures.
Chelsea Gaiero, Jonah Lovejoy, and Grace Hall participated in the April 3 virtual fair, which was organized by The Jackson Laboratory and the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance.
The fair comprised 157 students representing 23 schools in eight Maine counties tuned in to present virtual research or engineering projects to a panel of judges and attend events. High school students from across the state competed for prestigious state titles and over $1 million in scholarships and awards.

The Maine CDC reports 417 new cases of COVID-19 statewide and another 23 people, diagnosed with the virus, who have died. State health officials say 21 of the 23 deceased were confirmed through a review of vital records filed in the past two weeks, and actually died between December 21st and January 26th.
A new agreement between Hancock County Sheriff Scott Kane and Healthy Acadia will bring substance abuse recovery coaches back to the jail. Sheriff Kane had canceled the service after the organization expressed support for Black Lives Matter on social media, stating that the movement s penchant toward violence against law enforcement was concerning.

According to
News Center Maine, Vetri is competing in the oldest and most prestigious science and math competition in the country - the
Regeneron Science Talent Search. He made the top 40 out of 1,760 entries.
Jackson Labs tweeted how proud their were of him!
This talent search is looking for young scientists and minds who have ideas that could solve some of our biggest challenges. Vetri s project is called, Real-Time Fall Detection System for the Elderly Using Thermal Imaging and Deep Learning.

In case you missed the news this week, Bangor High Senior, Vetri Vel, just made the final cut in one of America s oldest and most esteemed STEM competitions.
The Regeneron Science Talent Search has been going on since 1942. Some of the students who have won this competition have gone on to win other prestigious National Medals of Science, and even Nobel prizes. So it s a pretty big deal for one of our own to have made it this far already!
