WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) - A former suburban Chicago deputy police chief has pleaded guilty to theft for falsifying records to obtain money for work he did not perform. Lake County State's Attorney Eric Rinehart said Tuesday that under a plea agreement, 51-year-old Patrick Zimmerman will pay $4,300 in restitution to the village of Vernon Hills, complete 50 public service hours, and serve 18 months of probation in exchange for the state dropping an official misconduct charge Rinehart says the theft was related to a traffic enforcement program administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. Zimmerman resigned from the Vernon Hills Police Department in September 2020.

Hawthorn Middle School North s physical education teachers are excited to introduce a new biking unit made possible with the assistance of the Vernon Hills Police Department and M&M Cyclery in Mundelein. The unit started on a virtual basis this school year, with students learning about biking safety, maintenance and how to access local trails. They will begin riding the bikes during the next school year.
