It’s the last weekend before restrictions in California are lifted and people are already getting a head start on what’s going to be a beautiful weekend
“We were at a bonfire and we were switching locations because the place we were at closed early,” said Sandy Nichols, one of Kulten Sargent’s friends.
Kulten Sargent, 17, was driving with Ava Bender, 18, in one car. According to his friends, the two had recently met.
“He met Ava and fell head over heels immediately,” said Nichols. “He loved this girl and that made me so happy. That was our last conversation.
Just a few minutes after that last conversation at the bonfire, Nichols says the group decided to head out towards Ventura Cove. Kulten Sargent and Ava Bender left first.
Emergency crews freed the young man and woman from the crumpled vehicle. The both died at the scene.
Police believe Sargent may have been speeding when he lost control. When firefighters arrived, they began the process of getting them out.
Buttle said the truck was “so badly mangled,” police thought there may have been more than two people inside.
NBC 7 spoke with a friend at the scene of the deadly crash who said the victims were part of a group of friends who had just left a bonfire at Fiesta Cove and were headed to a second one at Ventura Cove.
