Earth Day 1970 gave a voice to an emerging public consciousness about the state of our planet. It came to provide a voice to this emerging environmental consciousness and putting environmental concerns on the front page. Today, Earth Day is widely recognised as the largest secular observance in the world, marked by more than a billion people every year as a day of action to change human behaviour and create global, national and local policy changes. Now, the fight for a clean environment continues with increasing urgency, as the ravages of climate change become more and more apparent every day.

(courtesy photo/used under Creative Commons license) Michiganders lament the brain drain that sees some of our best and brightest young people fleeing the state for supposedly bigger and better things on the coasts and in major cities. I was one of those young people (though I am dubious as to whether my leaving caused much, if any, drain on Michigan s intellectual capital), who thought the best path forward was to head out to one of the coasts and pursue my destiny.
