The centre has been launched at West Maldon Community Centre, in Sunbury Way. It is offering lateral flow tests to people who are not showing symptoms, with results coming back in around 30 minutes. Essex public health director Dr Mike Gogarty said: “ Even though there has been a slight decrease in the infection rate in Maldon, we must not be complacent the numbers are still extremely concerning. Local NHS services are coming under significant strain as a result of the new variant of Covid-19. A critical incident had been declared across the county, with critical care and bed capacity rising as well as high staff sickness and self-isolation levels.
Covid Community testing for those who a asymptomatic has begun in the Maldon District. The tests, which began today (January 11), are targeted at people who don t have any symptoms who cannot work from home, and their families. However, anyone without symptoms will also have access to the test. The tests are part of a joint programme between Essex County Council and The Department for Helaht and Social Care. Cllr Wendy Stamp, Leader of Maldon District Council, said, the increased testing will help prevent and reduce transmission of Covid-19 in the community. “With infection rates so high and 1 in 18 people in Essex infectious, but many not having symptoms, we need to get as many people tested as we can.
The leader of Maldon District Council said she fully supports the declaration of a major incident across Essex as coronavirus cases surge. On Tuesday the number of patients in Essex receiving treatment for coronavirus exceeded those seen at the peak of the first wave of the virus in the spring. In response to the massive growth in demand on hospitals, particularly in mid and south Essex, the Essex Resilience Forum (ERF) has declared a major incident . Maldon District Council leader, Wendy Stamp said the move was necessary to ease pressure. The latest figures show that the infection rate in Maldon has increased again to 759.3 per 100,000.
A D-Day veteran has been the first person in the Maldon District to received the coronavirus vaccine. Donald McGeachy, 97 from Maldon was the first person to receive the vaccine at Maldon District Council offices earlier today (December 18). Earlier today we reported that the offices would open as a vaccine centre serving Blackwater Medical Centre, Longfield Medical Centre and Tollesbury Surgery.
