Fatalism - Everything2 com

Fatalism Fri Sep 15 2000 at 20:59:30 I don t mean to rant, but fatalism is one of the few things in life that really bothers me. The concept doesn t bother me nearly as much as how people use it as an excuse. Believing in fate isn t necessarily bad, but by saying that everything is already predestined and therefore impossible to fight against, you can lose meaning in your life. The total resignation of purpose can destroy your drive and pride in your accomplishments. If you do believe that everything is already planned, at least try to have some fun and try the things you don t believe that you were destined to do. After all, they very well could be a part of your destiny. Experiment!

Recipe: Chef Kevin s Empanadas

1 (14 ounce) package Empanada Discos (discs, yellow or white), thawed Vegetable oil, for frying Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking up meat with a wooden spoon, about 10 minutes. Add onions and cook until soft, about 5 minutes more. Stir in tomato sauce, olives, Sofrito, Sazon, garlic, oregano and black pepper. Lower heat to medium-low and simmer until mixture thickens, about 15 minutes. On a lightly floured work surface, using a rolling pin, roll out discos until 1/2-inch larger in diameter. Spoon about 1 Tbsp. meat mixture into middle, fold in half to form a half moon; moisten edges with water and pinch to seal closed, or seal with a fork.

from Offshore: The Social Event of the Week by Eva Murray Eva Murray lives, works and writes on Matinicus Island. I have come to despise, for no good reason except over-use, the term “hearty souls” as it applies to the residents of any wind-blasted and remote outpost. Maybe it’s “hardy” souls. Doesn’t matter, it could be either, and both have been exhausted in human-interest journalism to the point of hopeless cliché. Therefore I will not call the 29, at last count, who remain here “hearty souls.” Whatever it is we are, perhaps we are not that. We are, however, dump-pickers. Some of us, I fear, are also bored.
