Administrators in Ohio County Schools have been quick to tout the progress on a $2 million taxpayer investment for a turf-covered, multi-use sports field being built next to Wheeling Park High School. Those same administrators, though, seem to be resistant to efforts to spend just about that same amount to do something that truly would help most children in the district: institute a later school start time.
Ohio County Board of Education member Molly Aderholt is again pushing the district to address start times, particularly at Wheeling Park High School. Due to the weather, the Ohio Valley Mall has postponed its victory rally that will honor student athletes from Wheeling Park High School. The event was set for yesterday, but at the request of the school administration it was postponed.
The event will now be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in the mall’s center court. It will celebrate the state championships obtained by the girls soccer team, and the golf team. The Cafaro Foundation will present the school with a donation during the event.

Ohio County Schools will spend almont $600,000 on turf for a new multi-use athletic field at Wheeling Park High School.
The new field will be placed to the left of the baseball field, and not in “The Pit” over the hill from the field as was originally proposed.
Board of education members unanimously approved the turf purchase this week.
Ohio County Schools will pay the Astro Turf company $588,581. This amount includes the base price of the turf at $568,783, as well as an upgrade to a better fiber turf that increased the cost by $19,789, according to Assistant Superintendent Rick Jones.
