Four Iowans to be honored at Red Cross' Heroes of the Heartland event

Two men were playing a pick-up soccer game when their friend collapsed. They administered CPR as they waited for paramedics, and are credited with saving their friend’s life. Their story is one of four to be celebrated at the annual Heroes of the Heartland event, put on by the American Red Cross of Central Iowa. The 20th annual fundraiser will hold its first virtual event at 7:30 a.m. March 24. Last year s event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Registration is free through the Red Cross website. Donations support the Home Fire Campaign, which dispatches volunteers to respond and assist to house fire disasters.

Effingham, IL / Effingham Radio Mar 14, 2021 8:39 AM Effingham, IL -(Effingham Radio)-  As people turn their clocks forward for daylight saving time this Sunday, the American Red Cross of Missouri and Arkansas encourages everyone to also test their smoke alarms. Since July 1, Red Cross volunteers from the Missouri and Arkansas region have helped nearly 2,500 families with urgent needs like emergency lodging, financial assistance and recovery planning, following nearly 2,000 home fires in the Missouri and Arkansas region.    “Home fires remain the nation’s most frequent disaster during COVID-19,” said Chris Harmon, Regional Disaster Officer for the Missouri Arkansas Region.  “This weekend, take a moment to test your smoke alarms to help protect your family against home fires.”

The Home Fire Campaign has had an enormous impact on homes and families across the United States, and donations are well-utilized. As of October 2020, the Home Fire Campaign has made the following national impacts: 796 lives saved; 893,192 households made safer; and 2,159,459 smoke alarms installed.
