Feb 22, 2021 Press Release
WASHINGTON, D.C – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) vowed today to defeat the latest attempt by Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) to subvert District of Columbia. home rule. Lee recently introduced a resolution disapproving D.C.’s Minor Consent for Vaccinations Amendment Act of 2020, which permits minors capable of informed consent to receive a vaccine without parental consent.
“I don’t interfere with Senator Lee’s business, and I won’t tolerate his interference with D.C.’s,” Norton said. “Each district must decide such matters for themselves. The D.C. Mayor and Council understand D.C. and its residents as Senator Lee never will. Surely, he has enough work to do on his own state. D.C. will take care of D.C.”

On January 13, District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser signed the False Claims Amendment Act of 2020 (the Amendment), which expanded liability under the D.C. False Claims Act (D.C. FCA) to encompass tax-related claims. The Amendment is effective unless Congress jointly disapproves it during a 30-day review period. The Amendment endeavors to increase tax revenue for the District of Columbia by enabling the D.C. attorney general to bring a new category of D.C. FCA cases and to incentivize private citizen whistleblowers to file more
qui tam complaints. D.C. now joins New York and Illinois in taking the novel step of expanding its FCA to apply to tax fraud an expansion that, if successful, could become a wave of the future and create heightened exposure for tax liability for many businesses and individuals. [1]

Well, this could be awkward. On Monday mornings before Tuesday D.C. Council legislative meetings, Mayor
Muriel Bowser allows Chairman
Phil Mendelson to join her regular media briefing.
Before the pandemic, Mendelson held his own briefings ahead of Council meetings, but when Bowser began holding regular weekly pressers last March, they decided to combine the production for the sake of efficiency.
The Council’s next legislative meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 2. Two of the most significant items on the Council’s agenda are overrides of two of Bowser’s vetoes, setting up a potentially uncomfortable Monday briefing. LL cannot wait.
