Remember those who gave all this Memorial Day

In August 1968, I was assigned as the new field artillery forward observer for an infantry company commanded by Capt. Bill Meara.
Captain Meara told me his entire FO unit had been wounded and air lifted out two days prior. The man I replaced, Lt. Brown, would die on a hospital ship off the coast of Vietnam two weeks later.
It was on that first day I was introduced to my radio operator, a big red-headed kid from the hills of western Virginia. His name was Steve. We bonded immediately as I was born and raised in rural North Carolina.

When a fictional caterpillar chomps through one apple, two pears, three plums, four strawberries, five oranges, one piece of chocolate cake, one ice cream cone, one pickle, one slice of Swiss cheese, one slice of salami, one lollipop, one piece of cherry pie, one sausage, one cupcake and one slice of watermelon, it might get a stomach ache.
