Spring Journalist in Residence series explores how media report on critical news stories
UW–Madison’s Journalist in Residence program returns this spring with a series of virtual talks exploring what it means to be a journalist in today’s dynamic, deeply consequential news environment.
“Facing the Future” focuses on the media’s role in reporting on complex and often polarizing subjects. Topics of this semester’s talks range from the evolution of local news coverage to the role of media in the climate change debate.

Amy Westervelt: Wednesday, April 21, at 7 p.m.
Award-winning journalist and Critical Frequency founder Amy Westervelt will discuss the news media’s role in the fossil fuel industry’s efforts to block climate action and obscure climate science. As people around the world work to build healthier, sustainable societies, one key issue remains constant: developing solutions that are not only environmentally friendly but also financially viable. What are the most important technological breakthroughs that help us efficiently achieve better quality of life? What are the most important investments we can make today to improve air quality? Harvard boasts the largest endowment of any university in the world and supplements its finances with hundreds of millions of dollars in donations annually. Despite the scale of Harvardâs philanthropic efforts, a sizable gender disparity persists among the Universityâs donors.
In the fiscal year 2020, 338 individuals, families, foundations, organizations, governments, and other entities donated more than $1 million to Harvard, according to the Universityâs âReport of Givingâ released earlier this year.
Eight of them were individual women. They include four Harvard alumni, financial services executives, philanthropists, a former delegate to the United Nations General Assembly, and the Chief Operating Officer at Facebook.
