Election interview: We shouldn t wait until refugees are standing at the gates

Photo: Leonard Walpot/CDA Ahead of the March general election, DutchNews.nl is interviewing a number of prominent MPs about their party’s policies. Today, Gordon Darroch talks to CDA MP Martijn van Helvert. Compromise is the essence of politics and Martijn van Helvert believes it’s time to make it fashionable again. After a decade in which the strident populist right has tended to set the tone, both domestically and internationally, the Christian Democrats’ foreign affairs and defence spokesman says the fulcrum has shifted back towards the centre. Having tacked to the nationalist right under its former leader, Sybrand Buma, focusing on mass migration and the fears of ‘concerned citizens’, the CDA is looking to reassert itself as the party of moderate conservatism.

Dutch livestock sector faces new nitrogen law

Dutch livestock sector faces new nitrogen law The Dutch parliament, last month, approved a new law that aims to curb nitrogen emissions in the Netherlands. The Netherlands Agricultural and Horticultural Association (LTO) - the representative body of 35,000 Dutch agricultural entrepreneurs and employers - commented that, even though the law will be challenging for the Dutch agricultural sector, it was pleased that some of its proposals were eventually incorporated into the new legislation. “With the absence of concrete compulsory measures for the agricultural sector, however, it is difficult to determine the full effect the nitrogen law might have on the Dutch livestock industry,” reads a GAINS report from the USDA.

What happened in Washington DC is happening around the world | US news

I have been studying the international far right for almost 30 years now and have never seen them as emboldened as in the last years. To be clear, this is not just about Donald Trump or the US. Just last year mostly far-right anti-vaccine protesters tried to storm the Reichstag, the German parliament, also facing remarkably weak police resistance. And in the Netherlands, angry farmers, often led by the far-right Farmers Defence Force, have been destroying government offices and threatening politicians since 2019. Even further back, in 2006, far-right mobs stormed the Hungarian state television headquarters and battled the police for weeks in the streets of Budapest – in many ways the start of the radicalization and return to power of current prime minister Viktor Orbán.
