Arable April photo competition – the winners

Arable April showcased the very best of the tillage industry over the past month. The initiative was brought to you by the Irish Farmers Journal and the Irish Grain Growers Group (IGGG) with the support of Seedtech. We have received hundreds of entries to the Arable April photo competition. This week we reveal the winning photos as well as a selection of the best runner-up photos.

Arable April: sustainability to the fore for photo competition entries

SHARING OPTIONS: Ollie Whyte sourced a bit of help in his oilseed rape crop. Seventeen bee hives surround the oilseed rape on this farm, with 30,000 bees in each one. The initiative, run in conjunction with the Irish Grain Growers Group and supported by Seedtech, has a theme of sustainability. Through competition entries, posts and pictures on social media, tillage farmers, farming families and industry really showed the positives of the sector.

April has been a busy month on tillage farms. Over the past four weeks, readers have been sending in their best tillage snaps as part of Arable April. Arable April showcased the very best of the tillage industry over the month and was brought to you by the Irish Farmers Journal and the Irish Grain Growers Group (IGGG), with the support of Seedtech. Arable April: 10 crop Tipperary farm

In the past week or so the Government s Agri-Food Strategy 2030 called for 10% of utilised agricultural area to be dedicated to biodiversity so it’s an appropriate time to speak to tillage farmer Ger O’Meara who has 10 different crops growing on his farm near Cahir, Co Tipperary. So far Arable April has highlighted the many positives of the tillage sector in Ireland and implementing a good crop rotation is just one of the many measures the O’Mearas take to make the family farm more sustainable. Variety Among the crops on the O Meara farm are winter rape, winter rye, winter barley, winter oats, winter wheat, spring beans, spring barley, spring oats, fodder beet and grass.

Arable April has kicked off around the country and, this year, the Irish Farmers Journal has teamed up with Irish Grain Growers and Seedtech to bring you a photo competition.
