SWAINSBORO â A day of fishing is good, but you know what makes it even better? A day you catch a new state record! Christian Blake Jones of Swainsboro was out targeting crappie when he reeled in this new state record hickory shad. His catch, caught on the Ogeechee River (Emanuel County), weighed 2 pounds, 3 ounces, and broke a 25-year-old record (1 pound, 15 ounces caught in 1995), according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resourcesâ Wildlife Resources Division.
âIt is beyond exciting to hear about a new state record, and it emphasizes the fantastic fishing opportunities found in Georgia,â said Scott Robinson, assistant chief of Fisheries for the Wildlife Resources Division. âWho will catch the next one? It might be you â but you have to get outdoors and Go Fish Georgia!â

Homemade bottle traps
Question: Is it legal to use a homemade plastic bottle trap in lakes and other freshwater bodies? Anonymous
Answer: The 2020-21 Freshwater Sport Fishing Regulations state “Except as otherwise authorized, all fish may be taken only by angling with one closely attended rod and line (or with two rods if the angler is in possession of a valid two-rod stamp).”
However, there are two exceptions:
1. Traps can be used to catch bait fish, but only certain kinds of bait fish can be taken or used in particular bodies of water in the different fishing districts (see sections 4.05 – 4.30 of the Freshwater Sport Fishing Regulations for bait fish capture methods and bait fish use).
