There’s always the opportunity for any team to win any game on any day. That’s the nature of sports, right?
At least up to this point in the season, though, it seems as if there are three juggernauts in Division I women’s lacrosse with everyone else playing catch-up.

Things get even more interesting in the Big Ten this weekend.
Starting Friday afternoon when Northwestern heads to Baltimore to take on Johns Hopkins, the Big Ten will begin its Friday-Sunday schedule format.
Both Maryland and Michigan enter the weekend 0-1, and it’s possible that one will finish the weekend 0-3. The Wolverines head to College Park to play the Terrapins, who lost to Penn State last weekend. Michigan, on the other hand, dropped a surprising result to Ohio State.

The Orange, who were ranked No. 2 in the preseason and were undefeated in 2020, will try to prove that their 18-11 loss to Army last weekend was an aberration more than the norm. As will be the case most of this season, Syracuse will have the chance to rocket up the rankings given the strength and high rankings of its ACC foes.
A silver lining of the various schedule format changes in 2021 is that each ACC team will play two of their conference opponents twice. Syracuse, for example, has two games against both Virginia and Notre Dame. The upshot of the expanded conference matchups is a lot of great lacrosse.

It was something of a soft opening, with only a handful of games kicking off our 2021 Division I women’s lacrosse season. At the time of this writing, there are 33 games scheduled not counting contests that have already been postponed for this upcoming Friday-Sunday.

The schedule below seems almost too good to be true. Six top-20 matchups. The return of Big Ten play, where rivals will become even more familiar with one another because of the conference-only schedule format. The first games at Homewood Field and the Carrier Dome since last March.
Before we dig into any breakdown of the weekend slate, it’s impossible not to acknowledge the differences, both big and small. Yesterday’s announcement from the Ivy League council of presidents felt inevitable, but no less painful considering the way last season ended. The Carrier Dome won’t be filled with thousands of Orange faithful. Blue Jay goals at Homewood will not be fo
