Before we drift aimlessly into the bleak and barren landscape of many months without the nightly sustenance of NBA hoops, here are some final thoughts on the Finals on the 2021 NBA Finals:
My recap of Game Six included a list of candidates for “Best Close-out Finals Game”. I should have included Walt Frazier in Game Seven of the Lakers – Knicks Finals in 1970, which the Knicks won 113–99. That game is remembered as the “Willis Reed game”. Reed was not expected to play because of a severe leg injury, but he limped out of the locker room and down the tunnel to the court shortly before the game and the Madison Square Garden crowd exploded in joyous noise. Frazier’s line for the game: 36 points, 7 boards, 16 (!) assists. 12/17 from the floor, 12/12 on FTs. Along with his normal First Team All-Defense on the other end against all-time great Jerry West. It s Giannis Antetokounmpo s world and we re just living in it. The 26-year-old Nigerian phenom out of Greece has officially stamped his mark in NBA history. Giannis has been crowned NBA Champion and Finals MVP with the team that drafted him 15th overall back in 2013. Just several days after what looked like a catastrophic leg injury, Giannis was in the Game One starting lineup and made his presence felt despite a loss. He followed that up with back-to-back 40+ point performances. Then came the block in Game Four which changed the series. The Greek Freak somehow topped that with an equally memorable moment, the alley-oop at Phoenix in Game Five. Last night, he capped off a historic NBA Finals performance with an exclamation point. He went for a 50 piece and mixed in 5 blocks! His postgame emotions were equally as captivating as his stellar play. Antetokounmpo denied the Suns in 4 mantra and provided the city of Milwaukee with Bucks in 6.
The Bucks are on the brink of a championship thanks to one key stretch of play

People are rightfully praising Jrue Holiday for his strip of Devin Booker at end of the Game Five. That strip prevented the Suns from possibly scoring the go-ahead basket with less that 17 seconds left, and led to a break culminating in a perfect lob pass from Holiday to Giannis Antetokoumpo for a dunk, giving the Bucks a three-point lead. After bricking the “and-one” free throw that would have sealed the game, Giannis Antetokounmpo smartly tapped the rebound back to Khris Middleton a much better outcome than Giannis grabbing the rebound himself and having to shoot more free throws. Middleton then gave Bucks’ fans some palpitations by missing the first free throw before swishing the second, effectively clinching crucial Game Five.
