BDP to work up costed plans for restoration of Parliament as review says full decant will save billions | News

The report does acknowledge that one of these proposals - Mark Hines Architects scheme for Save Britain s Heritage to place the chamber in the building s courtyard and convert the existing space into grade A offices - would be cheaper. But it added: “While this looks promising on the surface, the compromises involved are very significant. A compromised chamber with a sub-standard solution on division lobbies, no committee rooms within the secure perimeter.Given the level to which facilities are compromised, it is unlikely that that this scheme is actually viable in terms of ensuring Parliament can continue to carry out its core functions.”

Teen touches police officer outside Yeppoon pub

Premium Content Subscriber only A man who placed both his hands on a police officer outside a Yeppoon pub has been fined $800. Braith William Whitfield, 18, pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on Thursday to obstructing a police officer in the vicinity of a licensed premises. The court heard that on January 27, at 2.30am, police were conducting patrols of the Yeppoon CBD when they saw a disturbance outside the Pacific Hotel. An officer got out of the vehicle and observed a number of intoxicated people yelling abuse and racist remarks at an Indigenous man. Police told the group to move away from the entrance to the hotel.

Repairing the Houses of Parliament is ruinously expensive

The construction industry is notoriously inexact, and any project is filled with uncertainty. What mysterious ruins will be found digging for the foundations? What critical components will not be delivered on time? Who’s even going to turn up on site today? As a casual viewer of Grand Designs will tell you, budgets and schedules are hopelessly inexact, and the inability to make construction more efficient and reliable has held the industry back for a long time. But when Meg Hillier, chair of the public accounts committee, recently suggested to Building that the cost of refurbishing the Houses of Parliament would be ‘at least’ £12 billion, three times the official estimate of £4 billion, even the most cynical ears should have pricked up. What on earth could possibly justify a cost of that magnitude?

Elections, taxes took center stage in 2020 amid a pandemic

Times Record In Sebastian County, two taxes gained arguably just as much attention as the decision over who will be in the White House come Jan. 20. Sebastian County voters struck down the 0.25% sales tax that sent roughly $6 million to support the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. However, the county did opt in favor of Issue 1, which indefinitely puts a 0.5% sales tax toward fixing, and in some cases improving or expanding, roads throughout the state. These issues were voted upon under the backdrop of the presidential election between President Donald Trump and President-Elect Joe Biden that proved to be one of the most contentious presidential elections in recent memory.
