Economics for Church Leaders: How Minimum-Wage Laws Affect the Poor

Editors’ note:  For church leaders to be more effective in seeking the “welfare of the city” (Jer. 29:7), we should know what economic concepts mean, how they should be applied, and how they affect the local church. The purpose of the Economics for Church Leaders series is not to present a theology of economics, but rather to provide a basic level of understanding that will help church leaders think more clearly about how to apply their faith commitments to economics and public policy. See the Economics for Church Leaders page for other articles. In 2016, the Democratic Party adopted a call to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour as part of the party platform. Now, President Biden is including that proposal as part of new $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief plan. Irresponsible and long overdue : What economists and workers say about Biden s bid for a $15 minimum wage and end to tip credits

‘Irresponsible’ and ‘long overdue’: What economists and workers say about Biden’s bid for a $15 minimum wage and end to tip credits MarketWatch 1/20/2021 © Getty Images When President-elect Joe Biden first proposed raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour on the campaign trail in 2019, the U.S. was experiencing its best unemployment figures in decades. Since then, the unemployment rate has nearly doubled to 6.7% as the pandemic has cost millions of Americans their livelihoods. Some observers say it’s a better time than ever for Biden to push for a $15 minimum wage and end tip credits a way to pay tipped workers less than minimum wage. But others say the timing couldn’t be worse for Biden’s wage proposals, which are part of his$1.9 trillion stimulus plan.
