Armstrong tops talented Junior entry in Portugal
Just weeks after a gripping opening round in Croatia, the FIA Junior WRC action switches to gravel at this week’s Vodafone Rally de Portugal (20 - 23 May).
Heading up the field of identical M-Sport Poland Ford Fiesta Rally4 cars is Croatia Rally victor Jon Armstrong.
The Ulsterman has previous experience of Portugal, having finished fourth in class in 2016, but admits the challenge ahead will be ‘tough’.
“It’s a very demanding event that takes both speed and a little bit of care for the car and tyres. It’s a nice challenge,” explained the 26-year-old.
Junior WRC: Koci charges into opening day Croatia lead
Martin Koči launched his FIA Junior WRC campaign in style on Friday to lead the category after a demanding opening leg at the Croatia Rally.
The Slovakian won just one of the seven completed speed tests in his Ford Fiesta Rally4, but a strong pace across the remaining special stages enabled him to build a handy 21.5sec advantage over Lauri Joona.
Koči snatched the lead when Sami Pajari cartwheeled off the road in the third stage and dropped more than two minutes. He was never headed as he steadily grew his advantage in the first of the five-round season.
