LMT will be taking a look at the top stories of the year both related to COVID-19 and not at all in a four-part series. Born in Clinton Indiana, Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence has spent more than 50 years as sheriff. I am the second longest serving active sheriff in the state, Spence said. There s one ahead of me, just a ways of me Larry Busby.
Four years ago he celebrated his 50 years in law enforcement with a big party and it seemed like the entire country made it out to congratulate him. I got 44 years with Willacy County all total, Spence said. Then ten years before that, gives me 54-years of carrying the badge at one time or another.

The first shipments of the COVID-19 vaccine arrived in the Valley three weeks ago but Willacy County has yet to receive any doses.
Regional Medical Director Dr. Emilie Prot said it could be because there isn t a hospital in the county. They have been trying to prioritized hospitals over small clinics, Dr. Prot said. We have a clinic in Willacy and we applied to get 100 doses. So if clinics can give 1,000, they are trying to prioritize getting 1,000 doses out the door, compared to lower numbers.

Willacy County on Monday reported that 16 people had tested positive for COVID-19.
The county did not release information about the gender or age of the people who tested positive.
Since the pandemic started, 1,600 people in Willacy County have tested positive for the virus.
