Limpopo floods: 5 people still missing, residents urged to be cautious

JOHANNESBURG – Authorities in Limpopo have warned members of the public to avoid crossing rivers, streams and dams. This after 10 people, including children, lost their lives after they were swept away during floods in the province since last month. Limpopo was recently hit by floods due to a tropical cyclone that hit Mozambique. The police’s Moatshe Ngoepe said several people including a 14-year-old boy who drowned at the Ga- Mochemi village in Serwalabarwana were still unaccounted for. “This warning comes after several people, aged between 14 and 73, lost their lives recently – especially young boys. Five drowned people are still missing at this stage. The search operations are still underway.”

Police station closed after road leading to it swept away by flood

Saps The Villa Nora police station in Limpopo has had to close after the road leading to it was swept away by the recent floods.   In a statement on Monday, the police said they had relocated prisoners to other police stations; this after the SA Weather Services (SAWS) issued flood warnings on Saturday for the North West and parts of the Free State and Limpopo.   The non-stop rainfall has caused damage and flooding since tropical storm Eloise hit Mozambique over two weeks ago. SAWS forecaster Luthando Masimini said while the storm s effects were initially felt, it had since passed.   The weather that we are experiencing right now in South Africa is caused by the continental tropical low pressure system that is sitting over the northern part of Botswana.
