Reactions of family, friends to Wilmington drive-by shooting Thursday

These two women were on the way to visit their sick relative in the hospital when they were caught in this tragic gunfire, the Wilmington Police Department stated in a news release on Friday. These women were completely innocent, with no gang ties. Chief Donny Williams and the entire police department are praying for this family. We hope that members of our community step forward with information to bring justice to this family. Wilmington has seen an influx of gun violence. Since the beginning of the year, there have been nearly 10 fatal shootings in Wilmington, among many non-fatal  and the community has had enough.

Wilmington police, New Hanover deputies involved in shooting

Wilmington police and New Hanover Sheriff s deputies were involved in a shooting incident Wednesday that ended with a suspect allegedly driving at a deputy before hitting a police vehicle. According to a news release from the Wilmington Police Department, Wilmington International Airport personnel encountered a suspicious man who tried to gain access to a secure area. The suspect, a 33-year-old male, was confronted by airport personnel who asked him to leave.  Around 5:01 p.m. police officers, who did not know of the airport incident, tried to perform a traffic stop on a vehicle committing a traffic offense. The driver refused to stop.

Former teacher sentenced for improper touching By John Hamilton - jhamilton@wnewsj.com Weber WILMINGTON A former substitute teacher was sentenced to jail time for inappropriately touching students. Gary Weber, 58, of Clarksville, was sentenced to 180 days in jail in Clinton County Municipal Court on July 26 after pleading guilty to sexual imposition. According to Wilmington Police Det. Bob Wilson, in November the department received a complaint of Weber, a substitute teacher at Wilmington Middle School, inappropriately touching female students. Weber had reportedly inappropriately “brushed up” against the student and put his fingers through the student’s hair. Along with the jail time, Weber must have no contact with the victim or any Wilmington City Schools student. He must also surrender his license to teach in Ohio.
