Calligraphy becoming a popular pandemic pastime in Calgary

  CALGARY It s more than beautiful handwriting. The artist can tell a story, not only with words, but convey an emotion with the way those letters are presented. Calligraphy dates back thousands of years but is seeing a resurgence in Calgary. Alma Taylor is a 39-year member of the Bow Valley Calligraphy Guild one of the largest in Canada with upward of 150 members. Taylor is passionate about calligraphy. It s the hands on creativity of it all, it really inspires you, said Taylor. Paper, oh my gosh, just touching paper and holding a pen and dipping it in ink, it s all exciting.

Article content Have you ever looked closely at the words “Municipal Building” on the front of Timmins’ city hall? My daughter-in-law did, and brought the anomaly to my attention. The lower-case letters ‘u’ on our city hall has the tail on the left, instead of on the right. It’s been that way since 1937 when the building was erected on Algonquin Boulevard. Being a curious person, I asked the standard journalists’ five questions: who, what, when, where and why. While I knew the what, when and where, there was still the question of who and why. No one I spoke with locally could give me a definitive answer, so I headed to the Internet.
