More than five cats are impounded in Mackay each week as they roam outside property boundaries. Mackay Regional Council Community and Client Services director Angela Hays said out of the 189 cats collected since July, 28 were euthanised because they were too aggressive for rehoming. Harrup Park Country Club has released designs for the Great Barrier Reef Arena to Mackay Regional Council to gain approval for the $10 million project.

The document outlined conditions required to sign off with rules ranging from bus routes to garbage collection, and the number of bike racks and carparking spaces available. Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson said earlier this year that prior to COVID-19, the current centre was reaching capacity two to three times a month.
“We (had) to rely very heavily on moving them out through the RSPCA or other animal welfare groups,” Cr Williamson said.
