PIERRE – Kenzie Gronlund and Lincoln Kienholz of Pierre Governor Basketball were named as the Pierre Athletic Coaches Association-Avera Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 6.
Gronlund was one of three seniors who ended their Governor basketball careers with a SoDak 16 loss at Rapid City Stevens on March 5. Head coach Kirk Beebout praised Gronlund: “Kenzie demonstrates what being a team player is all about., not only in girls basketball but in all she’s a part of. She often does, and is happy to do so, the “little” things it takes for a team to be successful. She led the team in charges taken with 20, 20 more than anyone else. She is our most vocal player and sets the tone on defense and has a high basketball IQ which allows her to play an important role on offense in the execution of what we are trying to do as a team. RAPID CITY – Pierre Governor boys wrestling stands fourth in Class A after the first round of SDHSAA State Wrestling at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
Brandon Valley and Watertown share the lead after the first day of individual competition with 35 points. Defending champion Rapid City Stevens is third with 28 points, followed by the Governors’ 25.
Nine Pierre wrestlers advanced to Friday’s quarterfinal matches. Blake Judson won his first-round match at 126 pounds, with Kahlor Hindman winning at 132, Hayden Shaffer at 138, Tyson Johnson at 145, Deegan Houska at 152, Gavin Stotts at 182, Jacob Larson at 195, Regan Bollweg at 220 and Preston Taylor at 285. Judson, Bollweg and Taylor had pins. Shaffer and Houska won by major decision. The others won by decision.
According to South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame,
The 1977 Rapid City Stevens grad won the gold medal at 136.5 pounds in freestyle wrestling at the 1984 Olympics, outscoring his first four opponents 52-4 to advance to the final, where he crushed Japan s Kosei Akaishi 24-11 in 4:52. He was the youngest member of 1980 Olympic wrestling team but President Jimmy Carter’s boycott prevented the U.S. team from traveling to the Games in Moscow.
