Updates Impacting Travel from India, China & Russia
While the ongoing pandemic is surging in some areas and slowing down in others, international travel conditions are constantly changing. The Office of International Education (OIE) is closely monitoring travel advisories and will communicate updates to CMU students, families and scholars as information becomes available. The U.S. government made the following announcements Friday, April 30:

In recent days, the CMU community has learned more about the devastating situation in India where a second surge of COVID-19 is quickly unfolding. We echo President Farnam Jahanian’s April 29 message to the campus community, and our hearts go out to the people of India and impacted CMU community members. Due to the surge, the White House announced the suspension of entry for travelers from India. Effective May 4, 2021, at 12:01 a.m. (eastern daylight time), the U.S. will restrict and suspend entry to the U.S. for nonimmig

OU International Students Services is continuing to work on summer financial assistance for international students despite the initial uncertainty caused by OU Housing checkout emails sent April 26.
In the email, OU Housing announced express or in-person checkouts from May 2 to 15 for OU students living in Traditions East and Traditions West. Several members of the OU international community said this message was anxiety inducing, as they expected to get OU summer housing for free due to the difficulty of traveling back to their home countries and their inability to pay three months of living expenses in the U.S.Â
Rabiea Abo Taha, an OU sophomore international student majoring in computer science, wrote in an email to The Daily he and other international students are concerned about how the lack of a university decision on free summer housing might limit their off-campus housing options.

This coming Wednesday, the House subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship, will hold a hearing oddly entitled “Why Don’t They Just Get in Line? Barriers to Legal Immigration.” You may think this is a waste of time and certainly I forgive the sentiment. However, there is always opportunity to learn even in the darkest of times. On paper, Democrats holding a committee hearing to rebut a strawman rhetorical question they asked themselves is an excellent microcosm of how Democratic leadership has functioned in the majority this year, but it does provide some space for an actual discussion about how many legal ways aliens can enter the United States.
