Monument or movement? Unions at the crossroads in fight for our future

LAST week I argued the trade union priority for our recovery must be to make work better through campaigning and organising; fighting for better pay and conditions, better rights and safety, and better opportunities and prospects for the people we represent and seek to represent, who do the work that underpins the whole of our society.  Recent trade union events on both sides of the Atlantic have only served to reinforce this point of view. While the disputes at Amazon in Bessemer and British Gas were fundamentally different, they also reveal the size of the fight facing this generation of trade unionists, and the challenges confronting us at both ends of the organising spectrum.

Mark (played by Bradley Taylor), recently out of prison, tries to rekindle his relationship with his daughter in the lead-up to Christmas. A poverty-stricken environment is instantly recognisable as we watch him wake up within his white van, going to work in a job he hates for almost nothing. Playing the loving father whilst trying to stay out of trouble proves impossible for Mark, though, as he soo

I can’t say which as it ll give the game away. The important matter is they can be both be enjoyed in their own right. Mark (Bradley Taylor) is an ex-con released just before Christmas and determined to go straight. Its tough, and harder still as he can only get low quality jobs that pay badly. He’s also trying to reconnect with his daughter Daisy (Oriana Rodrigues-Cova) looked after by his ex Julia (Angela Terence) which is proving difficult with his criminal baggage.
