Dr Mary McSherry retires after more than 37 years in Timaru

Esther Ashby-Coventry16:09, Jun 30 2021 Valentina Bellomo/Stuff After more than 37 years as a GP in Timaru, Dr Mary McSherry has retired and sold her Parkside Medical Centre practice. After almost four decades serving the medical needs of the community Timaru’s first woman GP is hanging up her stethoscope and retiring. Dr Mary McSherry arrived in Timaru in 1983, after graduating from Otago University and working in Christchurch, and said she was the first woman GP in the district. “A lot of women took the opportunity to have a female GP,” McSherry said. She chose medicine as a career path because growing up in Dunedin the girls at her co-ed school were only encouraged to do nursing or teaching, while the boys were offered accounting, engineering or medicine.
