Prayagraj: The unprecedented surge in Covid-19 cases has hit both retail and wholesale businesses in Sangam City with traders’ bodies claiming that the number of customers has fallen by more than half as they are avoiding visit to markets.
Concerned by the exploding Covid crisis, the traders have urged administration and police to order closure of markets and are even themselves planning to keep their establishments closed for a few days to break the virus chain.
President of Civil Lines Vyapar Mandal and Prayagraj Automobile Association, Sushil Kharbanda told TOI, “The market is badly hit and there is hardly 20% business. Lives of people are more important than business. We are witnessing declining footfall in markets with each passing day.”

Most of the main markets here, including Hazratganj and Aminabad, were voluntarily closed by traders for a few days on Thursday, to check the spread of COVID-19 and break its chain. In the wake of increase in the number of coronavirus cases, we have decided to voluntarily close the market for sales from April 15 to April 18. We will review this on Sunday evening. Essential services may, however, continue as per government directions, said Vinod Punjabi, Secretary, Hazratganj Traders Association.

KARNAL: A trader was shot at by three unidentified miscreants inside his shop at Gharounda town in Karnal district on Friday evening. The victim, identified as 48-year-old Vinod Juneja, was admitted to a hospital, where his condition was said to be stable.
Agitated over the incident, traders downed the shutters and held a protest on Saturday demanding the arrest of the guilty. They also blocked the service road of National Highway-44 near railway road chowk for around two hours over “police inaction”.
Gharounda Vyapar Mandal president Madan Lal said three miscreants barged into the shop and asked Vinod to hand over the cash. When he opposed them, the miscreants fired at him. Vinod received one bullet in his stomach.
