South Dakota law lays out who can carry weapons in county courthouses. But that same chapter allows county commissioners to waive those restrictions.
That s what the Custer County Commission has done. Anyone not prohibited by law can now carry guns in the Custer County Courthouse except in the areas where the Unified Judicial System conducts its business.
Chairman Jim Lintz says commissioners passed the resolution to make the courthouse safer and to affirm gun rights before the next presidential administration takes office.

The Water Management Board has set certain guidelines to consider water use for the Keystone XL pipeline. The board is hearing one legal consideration at a time for each of three rivers individually.
On this fourth day of hearings, testimony still centers on the first consideration, water quantity and availability.
However, when a witness is not available to come back for each of the considerations, he or she can be heard out of turn and address such topics as public good and beneficial use.
Wednesday morning started with one such witness. Made possible by your generous gifts. And by the Friends of South Dakota Public Broadcasting.

In 2014, forty non-Indian owners of cabins and other structures at Pickerel Lake challenged Day County s legal ability to impose property taxes. The structures in question are located on tribal land held in trust.
When a Fifth Circuit judge ruled for the county, the property owners appealed.
The South Dakota Supreme Court has upheld the lower court and ruled in favor of Day County.
