Fats Domino among new street, park names approved by City Council
The change to Caffin Avenue, which is named for a plantation owner, was separate from the controversial efforts to rename nearly three-dozen streets. Author: Danny Monteverde / Eyewitness News Published: 6:21 PM CDT July 1, 2021 Updated: 6:21 PM CDT July 1, 2021
NEW ORLEANS Caffin Avenue in the Lower 9th Ward will be renamed for Fats Domino on New Year’s Day 2022, the City Council voted Thursday.
That change was among four name changes the council approved unanimously as lawmakers work to remove names that honor Confederates or white supremacists from the cityscape.
Also changing names soon will be Washington Artillery Park, across Decatur Street from Jackson Square.

Thirty-three streets, three parks and one other public space in New Orleans are one step closer to getting new names now that the city’s Street Renaming Commission voted 7-1 for the changes Wednesday.
Most notably, Robert E. Lee Boulevard, named after the former Commander of the Confederate Army, could become Allen Toussaint Boulevard after the famed New Orleans musician. Tulane Avenue, named after Paul Tulane, who contributed to the Confederate government, could become Allison “Tootie” Montana Avenue, after the iconic Black Masking Mardi Gras Indian Big Chief.
A new name recommendation for Lee Circle is taking a little more time.
