Like some of his clubmates, Nixon uses a scooter to get around now he’s no longer driving. “If I didn’t have this scooter, I d be stuck in my house looking at four walls, it gives you freedom,” he said. The club is keen for new recruits to join them on outings twice a month. There’s a few advantages to travelling by scooter, Nixon reckons. “You’ve already got your chair.” And Nixon’s scooter has other advantages that fellow “gang” members claim gave him the advantage in the recent scavenger hunt. “He got all the clues. And his scooter goes ten times faster than most of them,” Marian Gallichan said.
The plan has upset several people who have written submissions to the council pleading with it to continue the service. Speaking to her submission during an LTP hearing, Thompson said cancelling the service would cause huge damage to elderly residents. Thompson, who is the activities manager at the Burlington Retirement Village in Prestons in north Christchurch, said more than 30 residents used the van during the 30 minutes it visited the village each week. The residents were not able to drive themselves to a library. “I truly believe it would be unjust to remove this service not only for the older adults of our community but for all people.”
Nagle has been a volunteer with Age Concern in South Taranaki for about four years, helping run the exercise class and weekly coffee mornings. She is also on the committee of South Taranaki Grey Power, and the South Taranaki Community Health Forum, and is a former member of the Taranaki District Health Board. “She is a typical volunteer who comes without any concern about herself, but is more concerned about the community, and we appreciate her, she has a wealth of knowledge,” Barnes said. “She’s an example to all of us what we should be.” Nagle received a month’s supply of frozen meals from Tomorrow s Meals, along with the letter and a certificate.
