TIFTON, Ga. (WALB) - Tifton police are investigating the death of Laura Aguirre, 24, who they said was reported missing Friday and her body was found the next day.

Tifton Police Chief Steve Hyman said they received a call Friday morning, reporting Aguirre hadn’t shown up to work.
“It started out as a missing person and trying to determine if she was missing or whether she had just walked off. As we got more and more, and people started talking, we were able to determine more,” said Hyman. “We put out a BOLO on GCIC to surrounding agencies that she was missing.”
SGMC Foundation receives $175K grant

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - The South Georgia Medical Center (SGMC) Foundation received a $175,000 grant from the Roots and Wings Foundation to support AngelEye, the new technology recently installed in the SGMC Birthplace.
AngelEye cameras allow families to check on their babies 24/7 through secure live streaming video over a computer, phone or tablet.
The grant will fund the software and 32 live streaming video cameras installed in the SGMC Birthplace.
“We are very grateful to receive this funding which will allow SGMC to deploy the latest technology and help families stay connected to their little ones,” said Elizabeth Vickers, the executive director of the SGMC Foundation.
Lowndes High School cadet awarded scholarship

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - WALB would like to congratulate Lowndes High School Cadet Hannah Byrd.
Byrd was recently awarded a full four-year college scholarship by Headquarters Air Force Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.
This scholarship will pay for her tuition, books, fees, room and board, plus provide her with a monthly living stipend while she attends college.

Lowndes Co. school receives Military Flagship Award

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - WALB would like to congratulate Pine Grove Elementary School for being one of seven schools in the state selected as a 2020-2021 Georgia Military Flagship School.
This award recognizes schools that go above and beyond to provide a supportive environment for military students and their families.
Military Flagship Schools provide specific outreach to military families and recognize and accommodate their unique needs.
Schools are chosen through a yearly application process that is open to every school in the state. Lowndes High School was a recipient of this award last year.
