According to the above report, the incident happened off of Miramar Beach, FL and was not an isolated incident, as rip currents have pushed local rescue authorities to their limits in recent days.
The 21-year-old, Layne Gravois, was taken from the water off of the beach and later died according to deputies of the Walton County Sheriff s Office. The above report adds that two more men, who attend Nicholls State University, were hospitalized as they were trying to assist in the rescue of the young boy.
A jury trial was scheduled to begin Tuesday, but Botelho entered his plea minutes before the opening statements. Walton County Circuit Judge Kelvin Wells sentenced Botelho to 20 years in prison.
The charges stem from a March 31, 2018, attack on a man who was trimming bushes in the front yard of his home on East Mitchell Avenue near Choctawhatchee Bay in Santa Rosa Beach.
The victim saw Botelho walking down the street and waved to him as he walked by, according to the release. The man reportedly did not know Botelho and assumed he was walking to a nearby park.
The victim went back to trimming his bushes, but suddenly noticed Botelho standing over him. Botelho reportedly punched the victim in the nose, kneed him in the chest and then wrestled a pair of garden shears out of his hands.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office closed waters in the county on April 8 after more than a dozen people were pulled from the Gulf of Mexico.
“During these water rescues, the flags stood at single red,” the sheriff’s office wrote on social media on Saturday. “That still indicates that the water was an incredible threat to human life with high surf and strong rip currents.”
Another man, later identified as 55-year-old Kim McGrady, also died by accidental drowning on the same day near the same beach. 11Alive.com reports that a memorial set up for McGrady said that he also died trying to save others while at the beach with his family.
