The Government has been using the former Shearings interchange site in Appleton Thorn as a 24/7 inland border control point for heavy goods vehicles since January 1 after the Brexit transition period ended. Conservative council candidate for Grappenhall Simon Brookes is leading calls for green projects to benefit residents near the inland border facility. He wrote to Labour-run Warrington Borough Council asking for information about how £800,000 of Government funding had been spent. The funding was earmarked to be used for highway mitigation, however, he says the letter from the council revealed that none of the funding has been used for this purpose, with it instead spent across the borough on a variety of projects and departments.
