Parks board, staff looking at renovating, not eliminating pool

Oak Ridge city staff now say it s unlikely the Oak Ridge Outdoor Swimming Pool will shut down early this summer because of chlorine issues, nor in the future because of structural problems.
The city Recreation and Parks Department assessed the amount of chlorine left for this summer season and what’s needed and said it believes it has enough chlorine to last until it can order more after the Oak Ridge City Council meeting July 12.
Many people have expressed fears of delays or even a pool closure after an action by Mayor Pro Tem Rick Chinn. He cast the sole nay vote in June on a measure to spend an amount not to exceed $60,000 to purchase chlorine briquettes.
More city buildings open; but wear masks
Special to The Oak Ridger
The city of Oak Ridge is opening various departments, but still taking some measures to ensure COVID-19 safety.
“After more than a year of active efforts to suppress COVID-19, I am announcing the effort to open for business. A review of all city departments and services has been conducted and although not at full capability, the following is a summary of various services,” City Manager Mark Watson stated in a news release.
Departmental services are continuing. City officials strongly urge citizens to conduct their business electronically, over the phone, and by mail whenever possible. City facilities will continue operations as below. For the safety of city employees and social distancing for customers, visitors may receive a temperature scan and inquiry about their current health. Call the city manager’s office or department offices on the city’s website for further information.
