The News-Enterprise on a state audit revealing issues with the unemployment insurance system: State Auditor Mike Harmon’s office made headlines last week with the release of a massive document labeled as volume one of the Statewide Single Audit of Kentucky for Fiscal Year 2020. The bulk of the 25 findings documented massive problems associated with a 1,300% increase in unemployment insurance claims resulting from extensive layoffs associated with businesses forced to close or curtail operations after Gov. Andy Beshear’s executive orders designed to curb the spread of COVID-19. The Office of Unemployment Insurance faced monumental issues as 49,023 new unemployment claims were filed during the week ending March 21 and an additional 113,149 new claims the next week. Also, three significant new unemployment insurance programs were created via the federal CARES Act designed to respond to economic hardships resulting from the pandemic.

Warren County Jail Continues Testing Following Recent COVID-10 Outbreak

WKU Public Radio reporter Rhonda Miller talked with Warren County Jailer Steven Harmon about his personal experience being sick with COVID-19, and about the number of positive cases at the jail and the ongoing testing.  Harmon: We re about percent through testing the inmate population. There were approximately 250 positive inmates. We ve had as many as 20 staff members out positive through probably the first part of December. We are still testing at this point. We re back to retesting the folks that were negative in the cells in the beginning of December. Very few of the inmates had any symptoms. We have had a couple that were hospitalized. December 15, 2020 Seven people have been charged in a massive methamphetamine distribution conspiracy that brought at least 25 pounds of the drug to Bowling Green, and attempted to bring 40 additional pounds. According to a federal indictment, beginning June 11, 2020, and continuing to on or about August 30, 2020, the seven defendants: Tyrecus J. Crowe, 29, of Bowling Green, Brandon Cherry, 24, of Bowling Green, George Sanchez, 26, of Los Angeles, California, Michael D. Padilla, 25, of Scottsdale, Arizona, Jeremy Quezada, 28, of Phoenix, Arizona, Andre M. Graham, and Raymond Derouse Jr., conspired to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
