The smell of freshly cut trees hung heavy on Old Airport Road on Sunday. Seven trees, that were standing strong till a day before, were axed on Saturday, paving way for the construction of grade separator (underpass) at the Suranjan Das Road junction. Armed with an approval from the expert committee, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (
BBMP) plans to remove a total of 25 trees and translocate seven.
On Sunday, the BBMP workers had also begun pruning the branches of many large trees that are earmarked for felling. The BBMP has also piled up large pieces of wood on the pavements , after axing some of the trees that were once home to hundreds of birds and small animals and shade for motorists too. Officials said they have tweaked the alignment to save about 16 trees.
