A major downtown Vancouver SkyTrain station will shut down for two years, forcing riders to find alternative ways to commute, as TransLink prepares to upgrade the decades-old Burrard Station.

Thales will provide 82 innovative SelTrac™ Vehicle On-Board Controllers (VOBCs) on 41 new trains for the Vancouver, Canada, SkyTrain fleet expansion, which will operate on the Expo and Millennium Lines. The new technology will allow for increased capacity and reliability for passengers.
Thales’ VOBC technology is an industry-leading, ingenious solution for urban rail transportation systems like TransLink’s SkyTrain network. VOBCs control propulsion, braking, direction of travel, door operations, enforce speed limits and report identified faults.
The VOBC is also a key component of Thales’ SelTrac™ Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) system, which is equipped on the Millennium and Expo lines, allowing the new trains to operate safely and efficiently with the existing fleet.

It s believed that public transit systems began in seventeenth century France with a horse-drawn public carriage system. Unfortunately, it was reserved for use by the upper classes and quickly abandoned due to lack of use. It took 200 years before public transit really caught on in urban areas. But by the end of the nineteenth century, most cities had extensive transit systems that still provide the foundations (and infrastructure) for today s elaborate trains, trams, skyways, and more.

Montreal s REM commuter rail system to be extended By Rick Da Conceicao

Montreal s REM commuter rail system will be extended to the boroughs of Pointe-aux-Trembles and Montréal-Nord along an underground route tracing Lacordaire Blvd.
The news, which was first reported by our sister station 98.5 FM, is expected to be officially announced Tuesday by Premier François Legault and Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante.
The extension will apparently include 20 stations along a 30-kilometre route and feature an aboveground connection to downtown’s Central Station that will span most of René-Lévesque Blvd.
For the unfamiliar, the Réseau express métropolitain is a light metro rapid transit system under construction in the Greater Montreal area.
