Due to frigid weather conditions the City of Belleville will activate the overnight warming centre tonight and tomorrow night. Visitors will be screened for COVID-19 and visitors must also register upon entry. Face masks and physical distancing are required at all times due to Covid-19 protocols.
The warming centre is located at the old Belleville Police Station located at 93 Dundas St. East. Entry through the west entrance of the building is required. Temperatures must reach -10C to -15C wind-chill in order for the centre to open. Please note that this is a warming centre for people to come in from the cold, beds and meals are not provided.
A coyote hunting contest hosted by a local gun and outdoor shop has sparked an outrage from environmental groups who expressed their hatred towards killing animals for sport. the contest was opened all through February and prizes would be given out to hunters who killed the 10 largest and smallest coyotes.
The Ontario government and other governments in north America did endorsed bounties and paid hunters to kill coyotes in the past but this is no longer used. Eco-Groups like Earthroots and Coyote Watch Canada have vilified the contest, and they believe the contest is illegal according to the Fish and Wildlife Conservation act.
